Mike your right, it aint a hardware thing and your not alone! There is something
FUBAR in the the way LM 7.2 default configures the Xfree86 config. I have a
server with a ATI expert2000 (Rage 128) chipset that has the exact same problem. I
am stuck at 800x600. If I try to change it, the systems locks requiring a hard
restart (makes me cringe each time).
Anyway, this isn't a new problem. The problem was there in LM 7.1, but there was a
work around in the xdrakconf that would allow you to successfully change
resolutions. (my 7.1 install was on a system with a Number 9 Imagine 128-2 video
card (God rest Number9's soul - great cards)
I don't have much else to add. My LM 7.2 box is a server and I can get by at
800x600 (kinda pisses me off), but I haven't had the time to sit down and really
dig into the problem. All I can do is agree with you that "it ain't a hardware
thing" and ask you to cc: me if you get an answer on this problem.
