Dear Jonathan:

You need to type as root:

update-menus -v

This will do it. You forgot the -v

Then log out of KDE 2.1 and log back in. 

Before you do this, you should first update your rpm database:

#rpm -- rebuilddb

then

#update-menus -v

That should do it. It did it for me.
