I think your problem has a simple solution.  At the login prompt, look
at the bottom of the dialog.  It should say xfce.  Note that you can
select here.  Click on it and select KDE and then press Go.  It sounds
like the default for your user account is now XFCE.  It's an easy fix
if that's it.
