_Parallel port_

Hello! I have a question regarding Mandrake accessing the parallel port. My
system is connected to a Primax Colorado 600p scanner and Canon BJC-4000
printer, both on lpt1 (it's called lp0 in Linux, right?). There are two
parallel ports on the scanner, one for the computer and one for the printer.

Printing (and scanning, not at the same time though) works in Windows but not
in Linux. Trying to configure with the different CUPS utilities I get either
something about "no parralel ports on this system" or "no printer detected".
Hmm..Right now I can't seem to get any cat info from /dev/parport0. It worked
before, although printing didn't.
Xscanimage tells me Xscanimage is a GIMP plugin and that no device has been
detected.
I don't really understand how to use sane-config..shouldn't it be implemented
into Harddrake somehow?

_Gravis Ultrasound support_

I ranted something about the ALSA drivers and GUS support earlier and have
been poking around with kernels, settings and the like since then. Apparently
there's fairly good Gravis Ultrasound (original, ACE..) support in
Mandrake, just by adding Hannu Savolainens' "gus" module to /etc/modules. But
why then aren't the original GUS and GUS ACE listed in Mandrake's hardware
support list? And why aren't they selectable in Harddrake? Even if they
aren't PnP I think there should be an option to add them manually, and select
what driver to use..kernel or ALSA. And/Or SoftOSS?
Trying to compile my own kernel I also noticed there is an option regarding
GUS sampling which seems to default to 8-bit. Do we only get 8-bit sound
support using the precompiled module?

_MandrakeUpdate_

There is a Mandrake-mirror on ftp.clinet.fi. This might be important, because
I know a lot of students here in my hometown are stuck with an ISP with a
bottleneck to everything outside of Finland. Getting Mandrake from Clinet
will get a nice 200kb/s transferrate instead of 7.

_KDE_

On our other computer (P166) all KDE applications either crash immidiately or
are very unstable. I did a clean Mandrake 7.2-Install prior to this. Also
tried removing all KDE-stuff and reinstalling but to no avail.

Sorry for the messy letter..probably a bunch of mistakes on my part. I'll
never be a Mandrake wiz but I like it anyway.

P.S.
Using 7.2 (Odysseus) without the updates.
