Hmm. error 32 MIGHT be broken pipe (looking at /usr/include/asm/errno.h),
but thats kinda strange. I glanced through ifup (its a script), and
saw no obvious pipes.

Shoot, I could not even find the script or executable that says 'Failed to
activate', after looking in /usr/bin and /usr/sbin, so I did the (in)famous

        find / -type f | xargs egrep 'Failed to activate'|less

And I'm still waiting...

Still waiting, and its been an hour. I think my find found a file that's
a pipe, and is stuck reading it. Foo. I've seen this before, has anyone
else?

So, giving up on that approach:

Someone else commented that you might want to look in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts,
and I'd like to elaborate on that. First, what does

        cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts;ls -l *ppp*

say?  Here's what mine says:

[foo@tempe-dhcp4 network-scripts]$ ls -l *ppp*
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root          855 Oct  6 06:40 ifdown-ppp*
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root         3141 Oct  6 06:40 ifup-ppp*

what does /etc/sysconfig/network say? Mine says:

[foo@tempe-dhcp4 sysconfig]$ cat network
NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4=false
DHCP_HOSTNAME=laptop.descomp.com
HOSTNAME=laptop.descomp.com
DOMAINNAME=descomp.com

hope this helps.
