Larry,
It just sounds like you got a furball stuck somewhere. Prolly nothing
you did wrong, or xfce...I wouldn't worry too much unless you notice
this happening a lot.

P.S. ReiserFS is awesome when it comes to hard-boots. Never bats an eye
or misses a beat. Restarts just it was starting normally!
