What I do is simply allocate a partition to the new version, but of course /home and swap can be shared, so I keep one partition for the working version and one for the new, and share /home and swap. If you have room on that disk, or if you have another disk you could add that has room, just make a partition big enough to hold all your 7.1 except /home and swap, and put 7.1 on it.
