I installed LM 8.0b3 on this machine last night, and wanted to report
back, in case anyone had the same machine.
Let me start out by saying that if you have one of these machines, go
put LM 8.0 on it NOW. Do not hesitate, do not question, do it now!
The install was as smooth as a baby's bottom. Probably the only
complaint that can be leveled against it is that it seems slow.
However, you have to compare apples to apples and realize that in a
comparable Windows installation, that additional time (and more) would
be spent loading all the application software, which comes stock with
LM.
I had tried 7.1 and 7.2 on this machine, but didn't have a lot of luck
getting the display to work properly out of the box. 8.0 and XFree
4.0.3 found the hardware and set it up perfectly.
Sound support. The computer has the ESS Allegro sound/Modem package on
it. Setup identified it, and it works without a hitch. The modem,
OTOH...it's a soft modem, so I'm not all that concerned about it. IMO,
a modem/ethernet combo card would be better.
Tonight, I am going to see if I can't get a USB modem hooked up and
running.
As soon as 8.0 final hits the mirrors, I've got a hunch that all of my
LM boxen are going to be getting an upgrade.
Just thought I would report my success. If you're interested, I'll keep
you posted on the USB modem.
