Don't know about safe but for me it was not possible.
Mandrake 8 will not get past the first install screen on
my Micron Transport GX+ laptop......VERY
annoying.
I hate to be a whine but in my opinion, Mandrake has been
steadily decreasing in stability since 7.1
Each release has many more wizzy features but seems to have
more hardware problems.

Most settings should exist somewhere in your home directory.
