You can set MTU options as a PPP parameter.
There is no "dynamic" utility to change or check this that I know of.
You'll need to try one setting, dial, and check the results.

Subject: [expert] Optimising MTU/MRU packet sizes
I have a problem here with a constantly varying dial-up line quality.
The quality during the past 48 hours or so has been such that every attempt
to download IBM's 1.3 Java rpms _OR_ tarballs either as complete 33M
filess or as part files has failed. Obviously I'm just a wee bit p&^#%^*d !!
When I used that other opsys, there were a number of utilities around
which enabled you to run a series of tests which would help to optimise
TCP/IP and PPP packet sizes.
I have hunted all over the net looking for such a program for Linux, but
I've come up with nothing.
Is anyone out there aware of such a utility.
Cheers
John (The Grumpy!!)
