I have *never* been able to get a complete shutdown out of Mandrake, now
that you mentino it. My box is usually up all the time and I don't reboot
unless I have to. Still, having to wait extra to have it fsck 30 gigs'
worth of partitions should be avoided.

For some reason, shutdown does not work. I always get a message telling
me 'no more processes left in this runlevel' and then I have to power
down.

In my experience, having them not cleanly mounted is safe, but it's 
important to recheck the filesystems afterwards.
