[expert] Dismal Graphics performance in Mandrake 8

I wonder if I did the right thing..

I have the ATI Rage Mobility chipset. It got successfully detected;
but any application that uses the libGL runs in slow motion now :(

It seems to be suffering from software rendering. How can I convince 
XFREE to use the 3D features of my laptop?
