I downloaded and burned the iso images of Mandrake 8.0 about 3-4 days before
it was officially announced for release (so I probably got a partial beta).
It installed just fine for me and has been working quite well. I have no
problems except KDM displays all services as users along with usernames.
It hasn't crashed on me - the only hard reboots I have had to do is when
trying to run a game, heretic2, in opengl mode. That locks up XFree real
nicely and the only fix is a hard reboot. This would seem to be more a game
issue rather than a Mandrake 8.0 issue.
My system is a classic Athlon 700 on an AK72 mobo, ATI Radeon 32 DDR (using
hardware 3d acceleration thanks to DRI) with agp mode 4, 256 MB SDRAM.
I am quite happy. My ethernet card, a 3COM 900B, works better too (meaning
that it only takes a few seconds to get an IP address from my DSL router
rather than the 30 seconds or so required before).

Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
