FWIW, if you have been using gimp 1.1. it has a curious fault. The
settings allow you to specify a work area for gimp which by default
is in /home/<user>/.

Under some unknown situation gimp 1.1 can get into a loop which
consumes this work space rapidly over time eventually filling it up
and crashing yuour system.

However, if you interrupt it before this point you will find a large
quantity of space used in /home/<user>/ but WITHOUT any file
directory entries. This space allocation will survive rebooting and
of course cannot be deleted. I suspect gimp is using this work space
in a raw disk access mode for speed.

The solution that worked for me was to delete /home/<user>/ entirely
and replace it with my last backup of that directory.

A nice gotcha, isn't it?
