Mark,

Wish I could be more helpful -- the simple direct answer is "no" I never
did get the problem solved, however, you might try the following: (This
was with respect to installing Mandrake 8.0)

Try the text mode installation of Mandrake, configure X during the
installation, but do not test it. (This worked for me when installing
Mandrake 7.2 on the system with the SiS 730/630 graphics chipset.

or

If the text mode install works but does not give you X after you reboot,
try configuring X with Xconfigurator or XF86config. (Or maybe it's
xf86config -- one needs X and one does not).

At this point, if it doesn't work, try downloading the Linux drivers
from SiS -- start at http://www.sis.com.tw/support/download/driver.htm
and make sure to get the Linux drivers.

or

If you happen to have Mandrake 7.2 installed and working (or can install
it and make it work), consider upgrading to Mandrake 8.0 (instead of
wiping out Mandrake 7.2 and doing a clean install). I think you will
have an opportunity to choose to keep your current video setup. (Choose
the expert install.)

As, I've said, I was not successful, but I did not try any of the
suggestions listed here. (It was my son's computer, and he got tired of
me fooling around.)

If you are successful, please let me know.

Good luck,
Randy Kramer

PS: I don't know what level of expertise you have. As always, if you
have important data to safeguard, back it up before starting (or if you
have a dual boot (with Windows) installation). Other than that, the
expert mode install is not something to be real worried about, and it
gives you more flexibility.

I took the liberty of replying to the Mandrake expert mailing list --
maybe someone has solved the problem or has additional suggestions. For
their benefit, I was trying to install Mandrake 8.0 (actually beta 3) on
a Matsonic MS8308 motherboard which includes an onboard SiS 730/630
chipset. I don't know if Mark has the same motherboard, something
similar, or something completely different.
