I had a lot of trouble getting GRUB and/or LILO to boot my machine. Finally created a /boot partition on hda, now I can boot Linux without a floppy -BUT- only Linux. Windows hangs after autoexec.bat runs. I should mention that Windows was working fine before I installed GRUB. The /boot partition (fs=ext2) is on hda6, Windows occupies hda1 and hda5 (vfat). I put my Windows boot floppy in, and rebooted. Same result, hang after autoexec.bat. Went into VMware, booted off the Windows floppy; it works fine. (!) Tried my LILO floppy - boots Linux fine. (!!) Created another boot floppy from VMware, just a basic stripped-down boot disk - no config.sys, no autoexec.bat, just command.com. Hang again (!!!) WTF, I say. Of course, my Windows 98 CD is an upgrade-only disk, so I can't just pop it in and go. I remember an old workaround from Windows 3.1; just need to copy a key file or two to trick install into thinking that Windows exists, but what a pain, since I don't remember which files I need! So, my question boils down to this: Why can I boot from a DOS floppy in VMware but not independently, when a LILO floppy works fine? And, is there anyway to access my existing Windows install directly from VMware (I know, that's probably a question for another list)? Thanks Jay -- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'.
