Dear friends:
First, my deep thanks once again to all of you who wrote in to help.
You've all been great.
Recalling the sequence in which the memory modules were physically
installed in the Soyo motherboard, I decided to take the advice of
several of you and remove one of the modules. I chose the middle module,
and, bingo, Windows was running just fine on my dual-boot. I then
proceeded to install LM 8.0 and everything went just fine. 256 megs of
real RAM and 512 megs of Linux swap. On my ancient AMD K6-2 StarOffice
now launches in 4 seconds, complete and ready to go!
It may be that the middle socket is corroded and corrupted or else the
memory module is defective. No need to pursue this matter any further. I
am very pleased with my 256 meg of RAM. No need to tempt fate by trying
to add more. At least not for now.
Thanks again.
Benjamin
