try http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86/  Its a really robust
memory checker.

As for a strategy for finding the bad or incompatible simm, I'd say

1. run the tests on the whole bank of simms at the same time.
2. then pull all the simms out and test them one at a time.
