Is your soundcard MIDI detected? I have a SB Awe 64 and harddrake detected 
the sound device but not the midi port. Maybe your card's midi device has not 
been detected by the install program.
Try running "sndconfig" as root from console (without X)
Also, be sure to select the correct midi port in kmid (not the external MIDI 
out port)
