I just installed Mandrake 8.0 on my intel810 machine and things are going well except for a strange problem that I am facing once in a while. Sometimes after using KDE for sometime the machine seems to freeze and I have to kill the X Server using the Ctrl-Alt-Backspace sequence. The next time KDM respawns and comes up I cannot log in. I am forced to go to console mode log in as root and then do a init 5. I can then log in from the KDM GUI. This is the first time in over 1 1/2 years of using linux that I am seeing such a problem. Anybody else facing this? Any ideas on what may be causing this. Any tips would be great. I should add that: 1) I have an Intel810 board. 2) Using Mandrake 8.0 install Only change from the default that I have made is that I have added the line amixer set 'Headphone' 100 unmute to the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file as the default settings are causing one of the headphone channels to become muted. I guess this should not matter as far as login through KDM is concerned. Thanks in advance. Arnab
