I was hoping this would be a "common" problem. Here we go: Intel
home-build machine, has been happily running Mandrake 7.2 with bits from
Cooker until RPM died. I then upgraded to Mandrake 8 on a fresh disk. I
configured ppp using linuxconf, but the configuration is almost
identical to the configuration I hand-wrote in MDK 7.2. Running ifup
ppp0 returns immediately with a failure in the syslogs (sorry, I cannot
remember the wording). Running pppd from a terminal causes a kernel
panic. If anyone can understand a kernel panic debugging info, I'll
write it down tonight. I tried recompiling the kernel and it is still
broken.

Basically: normal x86 machine, normal Mandrake 8.

Anyone got any ideas? Shall I recompile pppd from sources? If I can't
get this fixed I'll have to move to RedHat, which I don't want to do
(I'll miss Cooker)

Thanks for any help,
Ross
