The few times I have done this, I've elected to simply move some of the
directories around. Typically, you can just move some of the directories
on your existing 6gig drive over to the 20 meg drive after making the
new filesystems on the new drive. Then you'll need to edit /etc/fstab and
change and/or add mount points pointing to their new partitions on the
new drive. There's enough space to tar up old partitions into your
/home (or elsewhere) and extract them to their new homes. If you do it
right, you don't even need to backup, although it's always a good idea to
do so before attempting something like this.
The last time, I got a 30 gig drive. I had a 345 meg drive (/home and /var)
and a 1.6 gig with the rest of the installation on it. I significantly
expanded /home by making a 5 gig partition on the new drive and moving over
the old /home. I also decided (although not strictly necessary as I could
have just kept using the old installation) to upgrade to Mandrake 7.2 at that
time - and put it inside its own new partition on the new drive. I still
of course had the old installation on the 1.6 gig drive (I removed the
345 meg drive) in case I needed to copy over old stuff or compare things
etc.
One place where I screwed up during the install is that I still had the
old /var (and consequently the old rpm databases) active when I did the
install. This of course caused no end of problems when installing packages. :)
