I believe if you search the newbie archive, you'll find that 8.0's
stock kernel disables ata/66 or /100 if a VIA chipset is detected in
order to help prevent the **VIA-IDE bug from corrupting the HDD's.
IIRC, if you install kernel-linus then you can set your drives to
ata/66. IMO, the slight real world performance increase with ata/66
isn't worth the effort or risk.
Another suggested precaution is to reduce the FSB slightly, and VIA
recommends boosting the Vcore voltage. Some other suggestions are to
flash to the latest bios, and install the latest Windoze 4'n 1 drivers.
As the history of this bug evolves, it appears that most all the
systems affected are also either using a SB Live! sound card, or USB
devices. Use of an Abit board (KT7*), or Western Digital HDD's are also
most often involved with the problem. AMD recommends only using VIA
chipset boards still on their recommended motherboard list (many were
dropped as this bug came to light). Only 2 boards remain, Soyo and
Biostar.
** data corruption with large (100mb+) cross IDE file transfers, and
burning CD's.
