Classically, Voodoo PCI cards have had problems since 7.1. Partly kernel patches and partly Xfree. If you are using 8.0, kdm plus the Voodoo or the newest Nvidia driver are bad combos (SIGSEGV). However there is Xtart at http://perso.mandrakesoft.com/~civileme which lets you login from a console to a graphics window manager on your system, and it even supplies you with a menu of those properly installed. So either of the latter two look like they would work with the Xtart utility. If you want to test that version, just drop it in /usr/bin. It is Python code, so you can also get the source with a text editor.
