Maybe your problem is different, but this is my experience:
I have a Z32 printer. I downloaded the drivers from www.lexmark.es
In LM7.2 and 8.0, which uses CUPS, there were some changes to do for allow
printing:

(extracted from the README.TXT file):
********************************************
If you get "lpr is unable to print file: requested resource is currently
unavailable" error when installing his Z52/Z32 Lexmark Driver
 on Mandrake 7.2 box.
======================================================
This error occurs during the installation of the driver when they get to the
 alignment test page phase.
Solution: Mandrake 7.2 wants to use the CUPS printing system. The standard
lpr commands are hyphenated, in this example, lpd. Even if users don't
install
CUPS, or if they turn it off, it remains the system's default. To resolve
this issue create symbolic links to the current lpd version of these files.
Under the usr/bin directory, the commands lpq, lpr and lprm are all
currently
linked to the same command in the etc/alternatives directory.
You must remove the lpq, lpr and lprm links located in the usr/bin
directory
and then recreate them except this time link them to lpq-lpd, lpr-lpd
and the
lprm-lpd files located in the usr/bin directory.
See following examples:

Command syntax;
ln -s /usr/bin/lpr-lpd /usr/bin/lpr
This command symbolically links the newly created link, lpr under usr/bin to
the lpr-lpd existing command also located in usr/bin.

lpq linked to lpq-lpd
lpr linked to lpr-lpd
lprm linked to lprm-lpd

Once this is done, the install can be completed and files can now be
printed...

NOTE: Do not turn CUPS off. If you turn CUPS off, it will create an
"unknown printcap" file which you cannot print to. If you leave CUPS on,
it will create the appropriate printcap and you can print fine.
***********************************

Note: I already turn CUPS off and I can print with lpd :)
Salu2!
Oscar.
