Did you perform a FULL power off after setting up the
/etc/X11/XF86config-4 file first?
I.E. your system must be COLD or else the NVIDIA drivers will try to
initialize the card and be unable to because of previous conflicting
settings with XFree4.
It works fine for me...
DO NOT upgrade your kernel though!

Has anyone had success getting the Nvidia drivers (from www.nvidia.com)
to work with XFree86 4.1.0?
If I start X with "nvidia" as the driver (instead of "nv") it starts to
work, but then blacks out and I have to hit reset... no keys respond...
