Guys (and Gals),
There is still a huge void to be filled for someone smarter than I
to compile an RPM or SRPM for the new Samba 2.2.1a that will install on
a Mandrake 7.2 system. I don't know if it is possible, but I do know I
don't know enough to tell you one way or another. From my perspective,
there are a lot of installed 7.2 systems out there that could benefit
from a Samba 2.2.1a install, but currently there is no graceful way to
get 2.2.1a installed over 7.2 due to dependency problems.
I know enough to know that I am not the person you want trying to
figure this out. Hell, I'm a lawyer and it would probably take months
for me to draft a concise approach to sorting out the pam, cups and
glibc dependency problems with the RPM. Not to mention, every time I
heard a siren I would have to leave the keyboard to rush and try to beat
the ambulance to the accident.
Seriously, I have noted that many people on the list are scratching
their heads trying to figure out if it is possible to get Samba 2.2.1a
installed over Mandrake 7.2. Why is this a pressing issue - for me it
isn't except from a curiousity standpoint. I don't have oplock problems
and I don't have NT so the PDC, oplock , trusts, and Win2K benefits of
2.2.1a don't really matter to me. Hmm - but I'm curious and I like to
tinker so I would like to see if it's possible to marry 2.2.1a to LM
7.2. (Must come from the "how may horse power can I get out of a small
block Chevy years during high school" - Just under 500 with dual 660
center squirters and no bottle - 10.99 @ 132)
I don't have the experience to untangle the tar.gz and build a spec
file for LM 7.2 and sort out the dependency problems on my own. Now, I'm
not saying I couldn't do it, but from a reality standpoint and the
fleeting moments of time I have to devote to being my own admin, it's
simply a pipe dream to think I would have the time to devote to tearing
this issue apart.
So, what is the bottom line with Mandrake 7.2 and Samba 2.2.1a? Can
they work together? Civileme is off on vacation until October -- his
absence will be felt. Where do we need to send this issue to get an
answer on whether it can be done, gracefully or not?
