I have the exact same setup.
According to the CMI8330 HOWTO, at -

"At present with Linux kernel 2.2.14 the CMI8330 using the Sound Blaster
modules
will not play CD-ROM audio."

I have kernel 2.4.3 and I find the situation has not changed.
I have found that CD playing is possible with the Alsa 0.5.11 drivers.  
OSS emulation does not work, but I kludged that with symlink dsp -> adsp0
.
You also have to run the mixer for the 2nd device (the WSS), with 
'alsamixer -m1'.  If I select the CD channel, hit M to unmute, and then
raise all the levels, CD's play just fine.  After a restart this step has
to be performed again.
