If restarting is already an "option" for you, you might try changing to
init level 1, removing the module and changing back to init level 5 (or
3 - depending...).  This will of course kill all the running tasks.

To do so, do as root:

telinit 1
rmmod cpia (or whatnot)
telinit 3
