To all the misinformed: Look, there ARE drivers for winmodems. Go to http://www.linmodems.org , and you will find it. You may not find a solution for all winmodems, but you will for the popular ones. I have a Compaq Presario 1800 with a lucent chip, and it works great. So, go to the site, and read. You will find it, if not there, on one of the links provided. Also, go to http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html , where there I found this little nugget (from the site) : 2000-07-22 There is a new Linmodem driver available for the ESS ES56T-PI TeleDrive chipset. This driver may also work for close family members ES56-PI and ES56V-PI, which share the ES2898S DSP. Likely candidates, for example, would be the Archtek Smartlink 5634PEW or the Pine FM-3621.
