Hi.

I am using a rether modified Mandrake 7.0

Kernel replaced to 2.4.5 + bintools + pppd etc to suit.
(done by source build)

Whilst my lan works on W2K, on linux I cannot ping anything except
the local machine and the broadcast 192.168.1.255 address.

cat proc modules :

Since I KNOW that the hardware is working - the problem is elsewhere.
>From the log above, it appears that the initial probe for an NE2000 did
succeed, with the same io= and irq= employed by W2K

The first sign of trouble seems to be tha failure of modprobe to load ne.0
experiments with stopping the network and using insmod & rmmod directly
show that it is only possible to `insmod' ne.o with io=0x300 but the irq=
parameter can be set to 5 instead of 9 and the insmod [appears] to work.

Even with te `correct' io= ; irq= cat /proc/interrupts never shows any
interrupts against irq:9

[I suppose] that the problem ia either:

        1. ne.o driver broken.
        2. Novell/Anthem NE2000 does not work with ne.o
        3. something wrong with modules.conf
        4. Something else blocking the ne.o .0 driver (like this
        NETDEV_WATCHDOG) maybe?

It is quite possible that there IS something wrong with the modprobe.conf
script - but having modified it once and had to do a recovery from discette
I am not too keen on playing around with that !

modules.conf:

# ------------------------------
# rjp 20.10.00
# rjp 26.3.01
# ------------------------------
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias ppp0 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias eth0 ne
options scsi_hostadapter irq=11
# ------------------------------
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
post-install ne modprobe scsi_hostadapter
alias sound es1370
options ne io=0x300 irq=9

When eth0 is up, netstat -nr looks like this:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
192.168.1.4 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 40 0 0 eth0
