Try this:

grub --device-map=/boot/grub/device.map --batch <<EOF
install (hd0,4)/grub/stage1 d (hd0) (hd0,4)/grub/stage2 p
                         (hd0,4)/grub/menu.lst
quit
EOF

where the 4 in hd0,4 indicates the partition which has the /boot direcotry, 
counting from 0, not 1 like fdisk does.

Ps. Line "install" and following line "(hd0,4...)" are just 1 line. Ignore 
extra spaces I put in there.
