this message usually means the X Font Server is not running. that is why, 
before you type "startX"  (try it as root, without the quotes) "service xfs 
start". A little note, the color bootup screen has little to do with actual 
running X. That is a program called "aurora" and is not Xwindows. All that 
shows is that you have a video card that can do color, and that you have 
selected to run Aurora when booting. try serching for x font server
