Your friend is xconfig, the tool for setting your
kernel options. You don't have to recompile the
kernel to examine the settings, just look at the
menus which are very user-friendly. The menus
will show whatever settings are current, either
stock kernel or custom-built. When you customize
the kernel, the new settings are saved in a
hidden file (if I'm not mistaken, the file is
called .config).

To start xconfig, you have to first be logged in
as root. Startx, open an xterm and type:
 cd /usr/src/linux

(Note: /usr/src/linux is a symbolic link, and
depending on which distro or version you are
using, it might be something like
/usr/src/linux-2.4.3 or whatever. Just find the
symbolic link in /usr/src - it should be
the correct one).

OK, you are now at /usr/src/linux, so type: make
xconfig

This will build all your menus with the current
installed settings, and you can browse
away. Don't actually start changing settings (or
at least don't save the changes) unless you
intend to recompile the kernel.
