Hi I've got an Alpha 500au WS running 7.1 and had an 1000. I am surprise than you cannot boot the CD. I can boot it on an Alpha 1000, 2100 and the 500 I use the srm. At the prompt you type the cdrom address with this option -fl 0 Ex >>>b dqa0,0,4,0 -fl 0 it should boot the CD. The next problem is not to forget to create a small 10 Mb fat partition, to copy milo and the kernel image. because if you use ARC to boot your box you will need a boot partition to boot from. Now from srm you should be able to use aboot, but I don't use it, then ???. The other thing to check is the image you're using. According the type of Alpha box the kernel is different ensue the boot floppy. The symptom for a wrong image can be a lockup, kernel panic ,or nothing !!. Let say you manage to install the system. Do not enable X at startup, you're better to stick to good old prompt for now. I had enough problem with X locking up all over the place. It is best to configure the system first. Another cause of lockup at the installation. The system wants to go graphic but the alpha does not like it. Now there is a flag at bootup to switch the installation in consol mode Hope that help a bit Andre John Haywood wrote: > > (If this doesn't classify as 'expert', then I dunno....) > > I'm trying to install the Alpha version onto a DEC Alphastation 4000 (twin > processor, 512-meg RAM, 3 x SCSI cards, Storageworks array, 2 x NICs), using > the floppy images (this box doesn't boot from a CD-ROM), but each time it > halts after the second insertion of the root floppy (seq = root floppy, RAM > disk, root floppy), with a 'please try passing an init=' message at the end. > > Has anybody any advice on what parameter to feed to the kernel, and how to do > this from the SRM console at boot time? > > The alphalinux.org doesn't seem to be up at the moment, so please don't point > me there!! > > TIA > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? > Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
