There is a soldered-in EPROM to manage the I2C Bus, possibly integrated into 
a larger chip or package.  It is not flashable from the board, but somehow 
lm_sensors finds a way to overwrite it with garbage.  Once this happens, the 
laptop simply stops working, and nothing short of a motherboard replacement 
will remedy the situation.

IBM has apparently known of this since mid 2000.
