Yes, I would have to concur with the advise already rendered. If your
desire is to make a gateway/router machine configured with a firewall,
you need to have each nic on its own subnet with a different mask for
both nics. By not knowing your network typology, I can not make specific
suggestions. I would, however, suggest that a multihomed system should
consist of something on the order of a gateway/router with one interface
on the internet, and one interface on the private LAN. There a various
methods for doing this, and it would be up to your network needs as to
what method would be best for you.

In case my setup might help, here is what I have done:

internet-->gateway/router-->hub-->LAN

The interface for the gateway/router has a internet IP address, and the
interface for the LAN has a private network IP, i.e. 192.168.x.x. If you
keep in mind what you want from your design, you can keep it simple.
