Last night I tried to install LM 8.1. But it is lik nightmare. Firstly I have to say that my system is really old and I know LM with KDE cannot live in a system with a conf. of 200MMX, 48MB Ram and 96MB Swap. But i found this statement is no good for linux because I am running Win2000 Pro in this system without any problems and really fast. I do not want to start a debate of win and linux on old machines but in the light of this fact (being able to use win2000 happily) not able to use linux makes me crazy.
Ok, I start with last night. I formatted / and /home partitions using ReiserFs. I installed LM with KDE in about 1.5 hours (wow, Mandrake should do something in install process to improve speed. during the install i looked the log and saw rpm is installing in 8 by 8 packages and all committing rpm db between. Improvement can be possible here i think.) Anyway, I started my fresh linux box. But I can not even see a desktop screen for about 5-7 minutes. My harddisk was screaming like mad. In another console I looked top and saw my ram has exhausted and 1/4 of swap was used. At first time I couldnt finished DrakeFisrtTime it crashed. Finally I saw the KDE desktop in 15 minutes time. But my hd is still screeming. Top reports that there are some processes running like gawk (this seemed weird). After about another 10or15 minutes hd became normal. But applications start really slow and periodical harddisk activity each 2or 3 seconds occur (This can be somewhat journaling activity by ReiserFs??) At the bottom line, I think I would install light window managers but again I do not hope speedy and reliable system. I miss the old days of running lightning linux. I know there is something wrong but what? As i said at the beginning sayings like KDE(or GNOME) linux thing can do well on old machines are no good for future of Linux. Any idea, comment, whatever..
