Not to sound facecious but merely add more RAM. Linux optimizes whatever RAM usage it has available, so you gain nothing by trying to play with RAM cache settings. Linux is quite dynamic in this respect, adjusting things as it needs.
If you are getting poor performance: 1) Are you SURE the swapper is on and that it is using SWAP space? Type "free -m" and look at the bottom line. Does it say something like Swap: 509 Which in my case means 1/2 gig of swap space... Also look at the Mem: "Total" column. Do you have MORE than 128? 128 and below gives marginal performance, expecially on systems with older and slower hard drives. On these machines swapping to the drive is painfully slow, so more ram is warrented. Finally your system may be loaded down with services which you are not utilizing. You should go into the control panel and turn off anything which you KNOW you are not using. If you are unsure about something, leave it on. I.E. you may not be using HTTPD services and HTTPD-PERL since your machine is a workstation and not a server. Turn these off, etc. Each service uses an amount of available RAM when running... "ps x |more" while logged in as root, displays all of the running services. Long list isn't it? Some items Linux needs to function, others are probably merely eating up CPU cycles... You could go to the /etc/rc.d/init.d directory where all the startup/shutdown scripts for these services are listed... Choose one and try stopping it... I.E. "service smb stop". Now did Linux STOP doing something you need it to do? If not try another, etc. You can then turn these off in the control panel as you see fit. -JMS |-----Original Message----- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Fred Biehl |Sent: Monday, October 22, 2001 9:18 AM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: [expert] how to free cache from physical memory space? | | |Hello people and thanks for reading this message | |My difficulty follows: | |I want to (more like 'need to') limit or maybe close the file |systems cache in my physical memory space.
