Hey All,
OKie.. I'm in quite the quandry, and I need your
help.
I realize this is a linux list, and I am all for
using a linux solution, but if you know of a peice of software that will do this
in Windows (98 -> 2000) then I would like to know that too :)
Anywase, this is my problem.
I've got a real estate customer which is going
through about $1500 worth of paper a month (and they aren't that big of an
office). They would like to track the amount of paper each person is using
per month. I have found several programs which would work, but of a small
problem.
These computers are not logging into a server to
check their username and passwords. The computers are just logging in
default, and are left on all day. The computers are used by several
different people throughout the day, and the problem I have found is that all
the software that I have found is using the login name on the client to track
what is being printed from that "computer"
What I need is a program which will popup a user
name and password prompt, so that when someone prints from any computer on the
network, they would enter their username and password into the boxes, and it
would keep track of how many peices of paper they have used.
Asking people to log out and log in constatly is
not an option, so the only way to do it is to use the popup box. Not to
mention, I can't just ask them ONLY to print from their computer, that is
unfortunately also not an option (since there are two "public" computers which
are going to be used for printing as well)
Any all ALL suggestions are welcome. I would
like to use a Linux box (Mandrake 8.x) since they have a file server on linux
which they love since they havn't had to touch it since converting from windows,
but a windows 2000 option is also possibly since they recently bought a copy and
would like it to not go to waste.
Either option is accepted as feasable. Thanks
for your time and responses, as I greatly appreciate it.
