Hi,

[first post]

I'm having some interesting problems when trying to upgrade my kernel from
2.4.8 (which comes with Mandrake 8.1) to 2.4.13:

- It seems that the version of iptables has changed from 1.2.2 to 1.2.4 -
this required installing a new set of the userland applications (from
http://netfilter.samba.org/iptables-1.2.4.bz2), and tweaking the
rc.firewall* script to support both versions, depending on the kernel being
booted (script available upon request).

- Now, this machine is a firewall/proxy connected to the Internet via an
Alcatel ADSL modem, using pptp, with another ethernet card connected to the
LAN. Under 2.4.8, everything works fine (bravo to the Mandrake folks for the
clean installation tools!).

- But, with the new kernel, either (1) the boot process notifies "failure"
on starting the internet service, and then hangs between the last level 5
script and rc.local, requiring a hardware reboot (ouch! - I'll compile the
next kernel with MAGIC_SYSREQ, at least), or (2) if I enter interactive, and
skip the internet service, the boot completes, but I cannot 'ping' the ADSL
modem - I get 'network unreachable', although the route table and ifconfig
output are the same for both kernels.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? Any ideas? I've gone over the
configuration files over and over again, but couldn't find anything that
seems relevant.

        Thanks,

                Rony
