Hi, There is not much hope that someone on this list will answer a devfs related question. I made a similar query more than once about a weird mouse behavior after upgrading to MDK8.1 and none had a clue. (message: [expert] Devfs, M8.1 and Ps2 mouse)
I had experienced the same problem as you (I think) with the /mnt directory, I guess it is due to a supermount bug cuase it says just so sometimes while I shutdown Mandrake. Devfs makes X Windows to detect the mouse only after I go to a text console and come back to X Windows. Gpm does not find /dev/psaux or /dev/misc/psaux at bootup, but it finds them later, even being devfsd started long before gpm. Supermount fails most of the time and dumps error messages at shutdown. Everything I describe is on a 2.4.8 kernel given by Mandrake and recompiled with some options changed. I think I have heard on this list there were bugs in kernels after 2.4.3 in supermount and people was trying to test 2.4.12. Yesterday I was fed up and changed my lilo to boot my old 2.4.3 on my MDK8.1. Everything seems to go just fine, with no devfs but with supermount working perfectly. I may try to recompile 2.4.8 without devfs support or tryout 2.4.12. Good luck!
