Ive tried a lot, be careful, lots of crap out there. Squirrel Mail is the best. Its just like those commercial variants.
http://www.squirrelmail.org There is a wonderful api for writing plugins for extending its capabilities. I recommand it highly and use it in a number of commercial venues.
