Sending and receiving E-Mail are two separate and distinct functions, each using different techniques and software.
For the most part whenever you send mail, your system relies upon the fact that you are logged in as enough authorization to permit you to send E-Mail. E-Mail is passed from the client to the local postfix or sendmail server which then gets it to the destination, without real regard as to the sender. Receiving E-Mail is another matter altogether. If you are receiving E-Mail from your ISP, your client must log into the ISP's server to download the E-Mail. Since once into their system, everyone has access to the server, each user must authenticate their own client to the server to prevent cross exchanges of E-Mail. If you are receiving E-Mail locally, your machine must be registered with the internet as being an E-Mail server for your registered domain. In turn your client software can either "talk" directly to the local E-Mail server via, POP, Imap, etc. (requiring a username and password) or it can "pick up" the E-mail from your inbox instead. -JMS |-----Original Message----- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Stephen Liu |Sent: Friday, November 09, 2001 12:02 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: [expert] Kmail cannot receive email but can send email | | |Hi All People, | |I encounter another problem in running Mandrake 8.1 Each time when I |check mail in Kmail, a warning pop-up saying "Error, incorrect |password".
