Hi, First, congrats on finding the problem.
Actually, it sounds like a programmer made an implicit assumption on the panel, which breaks when the panel isn't in the default position (for example, getting a handle to the panel by querying the window manager for the botom-most window, and not checking for a NULL return value). This is the kind of bug report that programmers love. Welcome to Sun's QA team...
