lol, I think that if windows was cutdown so that it was an open source window manager for X on linux ,, I'd be happy...
Thats definately a pipe dream.. the point is this, right now, some of us need windows for specific purposes. I don't want to dick around with PCMCIA and modem cards to match when my notebook has a built in MiniPCI winmodem.. so I use windows on it.. so that when I am away from the offices, I can get my mail and browse.. with regard to your comment, if you use that analogy, microsoft have had a long time knicking stuff from other OS's and they are still having alot of trouble keeping it secure and stable.. so its unlikley they will change that anytime soon. Also, if we don't do the same to them, then why can linux read NTFS, why do we have samba??? why does KDE look and operate like windows (when windows is working that is..) They take code from other OS's when they can, and we take asthetic stuff from them to make things easier to understand.. you can't condone one without condoning the other... Winblows sucks, you won't get any arguement from me.. but we have to be fair to a degree about it, if we come accross as fanatics, who's gonna believe a word we say? rgds Frank -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Leif Madsen Sent: Tuesday, 27 November 2001 10:37 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] problem with linux Until Microsoft steals the idea and makes their own, as has been done with many products. They will then package it with the next OS release, and then all the windows users will use it, and Linux will no longer have the advantage. I use Linux because it's powerful, and I enjoy learning new things, but I don't feel that Linux is quite ready for the regular home user who has problems just logging onto the internet. I can see the near future being a combination of OS's with Linux running all the backend/server hardware, and Windows being placed on all the desktops. I think if Microsoft stripped down their OS so that it came with ONLY the OS, and it was small, fast, efficient and non bloated, you would see a lot more of that thing. But we all know that Microsoft isn't as smart as us, so I'm living in a pipe dream :) All IMVHO.
