Yes, I would concur with that,

I have samba setup here, and the performance has been great, I did some
tests with a 16mb zip file I made for the tests...

copied it to and from the linux box (8.1, 2.4.13-9kernel) and it was very
responsive, and that was on my crappy Ppro200 system, which is also running
postfix and httpd and others for my home network..

the 16mb file copied in the same or less time then I had copying it to and
from windows box's on the network, (my girlfriends computer)

So I can see nothing wrong with its performance.

| More recently my
|roommate installed Windows XP on his system and I noticed that
|it (the XP machine) could push ~9 MB/s to my main Linux box
|while my main Linux box (mdk 8.1) could only push ~6 MB/s.
|This leads me to believe that Samba (2.2.1a and below) has
|inferior performance to Windows XP when it comes to handling
|large files.

Quite the opposite is true.

Recent benchmarks on that very same version of Samba by Ziff-Davis
people (Cnet and the like) report that Samba EXCEEDS Win2K and WinXP in
xfer speeds.

You have something wrong with your setup.

I'm not going to get into the so called "raid" setup you are using...
Which is another problem altogether...
