you are quite correct. your small P2 machine will do just fine as a gateway/router for 
the rest of your network. As far as X being installed on that machine, all you'll 
really need is the bear minimum and at least one light-weight desktop manager to run 
in those times when you just need a GUI to help with configuration. In fact, that P2 
should be able to handle the firewall/gateway/mailserver/router responsibilities just 
fine. I've got two machine doing just that at the moment and Mandrake is doing a fine 
job of it.
