Further examination yields the following devices in /dev:

[root@access /root]# ls -l /dev/*st0*
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 128 Dec 13 15:44 /dev/nrst0
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 128 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 224 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0a
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 160 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0l
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 192 Sep 27 2000 /dev/nst0m
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 Dec 13 15:04 /dev/rst0
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 96 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0a
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 32 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0l
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 64 Dec 13 15:40 /dev/st0m

Btw, I have a duplicate system, similarly configured, it presents the same
error message, but has no difficulty seeking.

Any clues?
