I had a similar problem. Doesn't crash my box but I get a horrible sound until I reboot, sometimes it's just a sudden drop in sound quality, but a /etc/rc.d/init.d/sound restart fixes it.
I am not using kde though.. anyway I switched to freeamp which seems more stable. Thomas.
